The Splitscreen must be mounted firmly to the boat. If it wobbles around while you are rowing it will not work correctly.
The Splitscreen needs a clear view of the sky (don't put it underneath a rigger etc).
The mounting is a quarter turn twist lock. On delivery a new mount will be a little stiff but will wear in after the first few uses.
4. Basic controls
Press the left button to turn on.
Hold the left button for 3 seconds at any time to go to the main menu.
Hold the left button for 8 seconds to perform a hard reset - this is only required in the event of a fault.
The Splitscreen will turn itself off if it does not detect movement or any button presses for 10 minutes.
Do not insert anything into the small hole at the base of the unit. If you pierce the membrane that covers this hole, your Splitscreen will no longer be waterproof.
If you need to hard reset the unit, just hold the left button down for 8 seconds. The current rowing data will not be saved.
5. Rowing controls
Press the right button to choose which 2 or 3 types of data to display (from 500m split, rate, time and distance).
Press the left button to get the Splitscreen ready to row. The screen will display 'READY', but it will only start when you take your first stroke. Press the left button or go to the menu to cancel.
After you have started a piece, press the left button to pause. The screen will display 'PAUSE'. If you reset the piece or set a new piece then the paused piece will be stopped and recorded to memory.
Hold the right button down for 3 seconds to enter the "Coxing Screen". The text is smaller but more data is on screen. This shows all four standard metrics (rate, time, distance and 500m split) plus the average 500m split for the current piece and a single digit stroke counter that counts every 10 strokes (from 0 to 9). Press the right button to return to the normal rowing screens.
6. Menu screen
If the GPS does not have a good fix, then the status will be shown near the bottom of the menu screen. If the GPS has a good fix then there will be no GPS message on the menu screen.
The remaining battery charge is shown at the very bottom of the menu screen.
7. Menu controls
Once in the menu, the screen will show you what pressing the left or right buttons does.
At any time, hold the left button for 3 seconds to return to the main menu.
EXIT MENU
Select this to leave the menu and return to the live rowing screen.
OFF
Select this to turn the Splitscreen off.
The current rowing data will be saved so it will still be there when you turn the unit back on.
If you turn the unit off during a set piece (time or distance), the quarterly data will not be recorded - only the overall data.
RESET
Select this to reset the current rowing data. Time/distance will be reset to zero.
If you have started a piece then the data from that piece will be saved to memory.
SET DISTANCE
Select this to set a target distance for a piece.
Press the left button ("+1") to add one to the underlined digit.
Press the right button ("Next") to go to the next digit.
Hold the left button down for 3 seconds at any time to go back to the menu.
If you have entered a distance, then pressing the right button on the final digit ("Go!") will take you to the rowing screen with the distance programmed in.
When you press the left button, the screen will say "READY". When you start rowing the piece will start.
The piece will stop when you have completed the set distance and the results will be immediately saved to memory.
SET TIME
Select this to set a target time for a piece.
When you start rowing the timer will start.
The piece will stop when you have completed the set time and the results will be immediately saved to memory.
MEMORY
Select this to view the last 7 pieces completed.
Pressing the right button selects which piece or units to view.
Pressing the left button views the selected piece.
When viewing a piece, press the left button to go back or the right button to change the data displayed (distance, time or split).
If a pre-set piece (either distance or time) was completed uninterrupted, then the quarterly interval data will be shown. i.e if you programmed 16,000 m and completed it, then the memory will show you your performance in each 4,000 m. If you programmed and completed 4 minutes then it will display your data for each 1 minute.
Hold the left button down for 3 seconds at any time to go back to the menu.
PITCH GAUGE
Select this to use the Splitscreen as a pitch gauge.
When in pitch gauge mode, the GPS is turned off so the battery life is increased by roughly 2-3x.
When in pitch gauge mode the 'auto off' function will go from 10 minutes to 1 hour.
As with most pitch gauges, the best performance is +/- 45 degrees of wherever you 'zero' it.
RATE METER
Select this to use the Splitscreen as a manual (hand held) rate meter.
To use the manual rate meter, press the right button each time an oar is placed in the water. The stroke rate will be displayed.
The 500m split time displayed at the bottom of the screen is the average split that the GPS has detected over the last 5 seconds. If you are holding the Splitscreen still and your launch/bike is moving a consistent speed for 5 seconds then this will display your current split.
The 500m split is affected by all movement. If your launch is moving at a consistent speed but you are waving the Splitscreen around then the 500m split will be less accurate.
8. Charging
The Splitscreen only charges with a Qi compatible wireless charger.
A full charge takes about 3 hours.
It is normal for wireless charging devices to become warm during charging.
Ikea chargers are not recommended. Our testing lines up with their reviews.
If you want a simple Amazon recommendation: Anker chargers haven't missed a beat.
Wireless chargers aren't supplied with mains adapters.
The Splitscreen has safety features built in that will limit or stop charging if the battery is too hot or too cold.
9. Backlight
On models equipped with a backlight, it will turn on when there is not enough light to read the screen comfortably.
The backlight will turn off when there is a lot of light and you definitely don't need it any more.
The sensor works best with sunlight - you may find it does not work quite as well indoors.
The backlight may not work when the battery is critically low.
10. Batteries and Temperature
The battery life of all battery powered products are heavily dependant on temperature.
The stated battery life of products is generally measured at 20 degrees C.
As an example, a battery could only provide 65% of the stated capacity if used at 0 degrees C. This capacity will return when the battery temperature returns to 20 degrees C.
If a device is used at extremely low temperatures then it may not function at all.
11. Polarised Sunglasses
The Splitscreen is designed to be used WITH polarised sunglasses. In fact it is recommended! Unlike mobile phone screens or the NK Speedcoach, polarised sunglasses used with the Splitscreen will reduce glare from the water and will also remove glare from the screen, increasing contrast and readability.
